$1M+ to help Canadian Cancer Society and Pauktuutit Inuit Women of Canada improve cancer literacy and education among Inuit

TORONTO, ON (March 24, 2015) – In an effort to support increased awareness and health literacy in Canada’s Inuit communities, Jaguar Land Rover Canada ULC has partnered with the Canadian Cancer Society, the country’s most trusted source of cancer information, and Pauktuutit Inuit Women of Canada, to increase cancer knowledge among Inuit communities. This initiative aims to provide valuable resources and support Inuit in an effort to reduce their disproportionately high rate of cancer deaths relative to the rest of Canada. Jaguar Land Rover Canada is proud to be providing critical support to the Canadian Cancer Society and Pauktuutit to further this important work.

Canada’s Inuit communities have one of the highest rates of lung cancer in the world, yet limited access to cancer information. Building on the development of a comprehensive Inuktitut glossary of cancer-related terms by Pauktuutit Inuit Women of Canada, the Society and Pauktuutit will use Jaguar Land Rover Canada’s funding towards the creation of Inuit-specific resources that are accurate, culturally appropriate and accessible to Inuit patients and the health care providers working with them. The long-term goal is to increase awareness and understanding of cancer among Inuit communities and ultimately improve health outcomes.

“Cancer education and improving quality of life are a crucial part of our mission,” says Tracy Torchetti, Assistant Director of Cancer Information at the Canadian Cancer Society. “We appreciate having the support of Jaguar Land Rover Canada to help provide that for this community.”

Jaguar Land Rover Canada’s support allows for the development of these new tools and enables the Society to increase the reach of cancer information and cancer awareness among Inuit. This ensures that, like all Canadians, Inuit have access to accurate cancer information. The ultimate goal of this project is to reduce cancer incidence and mortality and improve the quality of life of Inuit living with cancer. This will have a lasting impact on Inuit today and for generations to come.

“We are inspired by the Canadian Cancer Society’s work and all they do to advance knowledge and improve the quality of life of all Canadians, particularly those most touched by this devastating disease,” commented Jaguar Land Rover Canada President, Lindsay Duffield. “This project is a perfect example of Jaguar Land Rover Canada’s continued effort to support healthy communities and create opportunities for future generations.”

Rebecca Kudloo, President of Pauktuutit Inuit Women of Canada says “Each of us has a role to play and a contribution to make in the Inuit cancer knowledge journey. The end result of this project will provide both Inuit and health care providers resources that will improve health literacy, decrease health disparities and improve cultural competency.   Inuit will have the tools to be active partners in their own health care.”

Jaguar Land Rover Canada is the sole corporate supporter of this important project, made possible through Jaguar Land Rover’s Global Corporate Social Responsibility Program, which aims to improve lives and advance knowledge by supporting projects that enhance health, well-being and the environment. The donation of $1.4 million from Jaguar Land Rover Canada will help to support this initiative in addition to other important cancer-fighting projects.
