Purpose

The Advisory Committee is providing guidance to Pauktuutit Inuit Women of Canada as we develop a National Healing Strategy to address the legacy of residential schools for Inuit. The Advisory Committee is ensuring that the process to develop the strategy is appropriate and that the final strategy addresses the needs of Inuit.

Membership

Pauktuutit Inuit Women of Canada Chairs the Committee.

Committee members include:

  • Inuit community members, particularly: elders, former students of residential schools, and healers
  • Resource persons include: counsellors, academics and experts, MLAs
  • Organizations that share a commitment to the purpose and objectives of this project, particularly Inuit representational organizations
  • Indian Residential Schools Resolution Canada (IRSRC) ex officio

Additional resource people are brought in to assist the committee as needed.

Duties

  • Participate in an initial in-person meeting in January 2006 in Ottawa, and up to 5 teleconferences per year, as arranged by the project coordinator.
  • Provide guidance to Pauktuutit Inuit Women of Canada on project plans and activities
  • Raise awareness and share information about the project within Inuit communities, organizations and networks
  • Seek input to the strategy from within Inuit communities
  • Assist Pauktuutit Inuit Women of Canada to evaluate our work and the resulting strategy
  • Explore ways and means of implementing the strategy in Inuit communities across Canada

Term of Office: October 2005 to March 31, 2007
