Abuse Prevention

The success of Pauktuutit’s initiatives is based on Inuit values, culture, language and practices. Since 1984, one of Pauktuutit’s main priorities has been to address family violence and abuse prevention in Inuit communities.

ABUSE PREVENTION TEAM

Pauktuutit’s Abuse Prevention Department (APD) team is a small group of dedicated individuals with a broad range of subject-matter expertise. The team, although not service providers, are in touch with many on-the-ground personnel and develop close ties in the community. The Board of Directors has championed many abuse prevention initiatives and provides guidance, regional perspectives and subject matter expertise concerning many of the issues.

There are many different issues that are encompassed in the APD. APD develops resources from a national  perspective that can be adapted, modified, and used in all the Inuit regions and communities.

APD works with the communities, partners and governments to develop Inuit-specific strategies and solutions to end violence. These issues include, but are not limited to:

  • Child sexual abuse;
  • Elder abuse;
  • Family violence;
  • Missing and murdered Inuit women and girls;
  • Residential schools;
  • Shelters network;
  • Youth.

Pauktuutit’s work is grounded in the guiding principles of a collaborative and holistic approach that includes women, children, families, and communities. An example of this strength of this is working with and seeking the guidance of elders, Inuit organizations and subject-matter experts who form our Advisory Committees.

Pauktuutit implements numerous projects on an annual basis working with a variety of funders on issues of mutual concern. Pauktuutit’s work would not be possible without the support of many like-minded partners dedicated to making a difference in the lives of Inuit women, their families, and communities.
