Projects and Activities

AIDS Walks

For the past five years, Pauktuutit has been the liaison for Northern communities wishing to have AIDS Walks in their communities. AIDS Walk Canada is a project of the Canadian AIDS Society. A number of Inuit communities have had walks and some communities have had the highest participation per capita in the country. To host an AIDS Walk in your community, contact Pauktuutit. Check out our gallery to see photos from AIDS Walks over the years.

HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis C Fairs

Every year for the past 5 years, Pauktuutit has supported communities wishing to host HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis C Fairs. The Fairs are essentially contests where youth create projects that raise awareness of any aspect of HIV and/or hepatitis C. The projects are judged and prizes awarded to winning participants. Aboriginal people who are living with HIV and/or hepatitis C travel to the community to speak about their experience living with HIV and/or hepatitis C. To coordinate an HIV/AIDS + Hepatitis C Fair in your community, contact Pauktuutit. Check out our photo gallery to see pictures from this year's Fairs and previous years.

Environmental Scan

Last year, Pauktuutit conducted an Environmental Scan – a series of meetings with governmental departments, Regional Inuit Associations, community health representatives/workers, teachers, community members, etc. - to find out how people feel their region is currently responding to HIV/AIDS and hepatitis C.

The purpose of the Scan was assist Pauktuutit in designing programs and projects that respond more directly to specific gaps and priorities as identified by the regions, while equally or more important, supporting HIV/AIDS and hepatitis C action that is happening at local community and regional levels.

Short-term Objectives:

  • To understand strengths as well as the gaps and barriers for communities and regions to design and implement HIV and hepatitis C projects and programmes, and;
  • To conduct consultations with project stakeholders in the regions.

Long-term Objectives:

  • To develop and/or enhance partnerships with the regions and communities, and;
  • To design projects that respond to priorities as identified by the regions.

Possible Outcomes:

  • HIV/AIDS and hepatitis C training workshops
  • Proposal development resources (workshops, toolkits, mentoring, etc.)
  • Continued production and distribution of Inuit-specific awareness materials translated into Inuktitut (syllabics and Labrador dialect)
  • Continuation of the HIV/AIDS and Hep C Fairs project

For a summary of Findings from the Environmental Scan have been compiled in a report.

HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis C and Sexual Health UPDATES

In response to a request from CIHAN Advisory Committee members to have information presented in a way that is informal and accessible to communities, staff have started producing Sexual Health, HIV and Hepatitis C UPDATES, as a way of communicating bits of information that people might find interesting. Each UPDATE includes a note from the Pauktuutit office about what’s happening, other information we think might be of interest to communities, and an update from one of the regions as a way of facilitating some cross-regional sharing.
